CLOSE-UP 2011: THE JOURNEY BEGINS
March 11-12, 2011
Our trip started off during Hawaii's Tsunami watch, which included three students evacuating their homes. This led to airports shutting down and student(s) missing their flight because of debris on the road. Unfortunately, Mr. Ornellas couldn't attend our trip with us. So for the time being, we've been texting and calling him every step of the way, even when it was 1am Hawaii time.
Once we were all at the Honolulu International Airport, we had to wait another 5 hours to board our plane to Chicago. The flight was almost 8 hours long, but it felt like a whole day. The seats were uncomfortable, the plane was hot, and it seemed like it would never end.
Five minutes after landing in Chicago, we immediately boarded our 2 hour flight to Washington, D.C. This flight was more comfortable and faster than the first one. Once we were in D.C., we checked into the hotel, then took the metro to the Smithsonian. The number one rule of the metro is you have to be FAST. As soon as the doors open, you need to get in or out ASAP, because the metro waits for no one (not even President Obama).
The first museum we visited was the Holocaust Museum. We learned about Daniel, a boy who survived the Holocaust. We took a tour of an exhibit of his life, called "Daniel's Story: Remember the Children". This included his house, the ghetto his family had to live in, and a concentration camp. We also wrote him postcards. After this, we went traveling throughout the rest of the museum. Some of us were already feeling jet lag, and could barely keep ourselves awake during the videos we watched.
The walk over to the Native American Museum was a journey in itself. We stopped at almost every vendor asking for mitten prices. At every one, the price seemed to get lower (except for the last two). The two of us ended up buying "eskimo beanies", and Eesha found the perfect mittens for $4.
At the Native American Museum, we explored the museum, learning about all the different tribes. There were many artifacts, videos, articles, and statues. There was even a canoe made in Hawai'i. By this time we were all burned out and ready to get back to the hotel. We boarded the Metro again, and took the shuttle to the Crowne Plaza Old Town Hotel.
As of right now, we just finished eating a scrumpdiliumptious meal with students from McKinley High School. We don't have any roomates YET, but we will tomorrow night. So until then, hasta manana!

P.S. Eesha is SO in love with her hat and her mittens :).
