So today was a very special day for us Molokai High School students, because it was Capitol Hill day. Capitol Hill is a day where all of the students in the Close Up program go with their group/state to meet up with their congressional representatives. We were lucky to be able to visit the Library of Congress Asian Pacific Section. We were asked to translate old documents that we found out were on budgeting of a reigning Hawaiian king of the 1800's. We were really fortunate to meet representatives of our Congresswoman Mazie Hirono, and have a little chat about recent bills that have been brought up, like drug testing people who are on welfare. But the most exciting thing that we were able to do was meet and speak with one of our State Senator's Daniel Akaka. It was a fast get together with him, because he was making his way to a Senate hearing, but he was really grateful and enjoyed our oli that was composed by Kumu Manuwai Peters. Tonight we went to The Kennedy Theater to watch a live play "Shear Madness." It was a mystery murder where we got to play along with the actors to figure out who killed a famous pianist. Overall, today was a feet blistering day that I really enjoyed along with the rest of the Moloka'i students. ~Jessica
